30 coloring book niches and how to choose yours on Amazon KDP
Dinosaurs, mandalas, unicorns, Christmas: which ones hold steady demand, which are saturated, and how to pick your angle before investing time in a book.
A KDP Coloring Book Studio guide

The quick version
There is no magic niche. The themes with steady demand are the usual ones (animals, dinosaurs, mandalas, fantasy), and what decides whether you sell is how specific your book is and who you made it for.

niche groups
This guide groups the 30 themes you can generate in the studio by the buyer behind each one, with an honest line about the competition. There are no per-niche sales figures here: there are criteria for choosing, and links so you can see what the pages look like.
How to read this list (4 checks before you publish)
No theme sells on its own. These four questions separate a niche with room in it from one where you compete against books with years of reviews.
Search the exact term on Amazon. If the top results have hundreds of reviews and professional covers, go one level down: instead of "dogs", publish "corgis".
A parent looking for something for a road trip, a teacher who needs classroom material, someone buying a gift and an adult coloring to relax all buy different books, even when the theme has the same name.
Work out what the book costs you to produce and what net royalty each sale leaves. With a gross royalty near 3 dollars it takes only a few sales to cover production, but tax withholding and ads change that number.
Seasonal themes need to be published and reviewed weeks before the date. Evergreen themes can go out any day of the year.
30 niches, grouped by the buyer behind them
Each niche has its own page with examples, sub-theme ideas and frequently asked questions. Open it to see the page style before you commit.
Animals and nature: demand that never switches off
These sell all twelve months. The audience refills itself, because every year a new group of kids reaches coloring age.
Kids arrive at three and grow out of it around ten, so the audience refills every year. Crowded, but demand never drops.
Open the themeThe safest first book: broad enough as a gift, and easy to split later into farm, jungle or ocean editions.
Open the themeAdults buy this one for themselves too. Cute cartoon cats sell to kids; detailed ones sell to people coloring to relax.
Open the themeBreed-specific books (corgis, dachshunds, goldens) face far less competition than a generic dog book.
Open the themeAn audience with its own hobby: riding-school kids and teens who already buy anything with horses on it.
Open the themeWorks at both ends: simple birds for preschoolers, detailed feathers for adult colorists.
Open the themeA preschool and homeschool staple, tied to early learning: sounds, names, counting.
Open the themeZoo trips and safari days create gift moments all through the holidays.
Open the themeA small, uncrowded niche: bug-obsessed kids and school science units.
Open the themeNarrow but loyal: ocean-conservation gifts and aquarium souvenirs.
Open the themeFantasy, vehicles and play: the angle decides
Demand is high here, and so is competition. The angle is what separates you: the more specific your book, the less you fight for Amazon's first page.
One of the most saturated niches on KDP. Only enter with a clear angle: bakery unicorns, space unicorns, yoga unicorns.
Open the themeThe rainbow variant pulls you out of the generic fight with a brighter, younger product.
Open the themeSpans ages: chunky cute dragons at five, intricate scales for teens and adults.
Open the themeSummer and birthday-party demand, and it pairs naturally with an ocean book.
Open the themeQuiet garden-sized fantasy, a favorite of anyone buying a gift for small children.
Open the themeHuge demand, huge competition. Steer clear of anything that resembles a licensed character.
Open the themeLess served than dinosaurs, and a natural fit for anyone shopping for STEM gifts.
Open the themeA reliable seller. Splitting it into race cars, classics or monster trucks beats one generic book.
Open the themeToddler obsession territory: diggers and dump trucks sell year-round to 2 to 5 year olds.
Open the themeA cozy, adult-leaning niche with a very strong Christmas window.
Open the themeAdults and relaxation: the buyer who gifts themselves
This audience buys for itself, buys again and values detail. It usually tolerates slightly higher prices than the kids' section.
The adult classic. Impossible to win generically, workable when you combine it: cat mandalas, flower mandalas, animal mandalas.
Open the themeSteady adult demand all year, and a natural Mother's Day product.
Open the themePairs with flowers, and works both for large-print editions and for adult colorists.
Open the themeCalm, meditative pages. With simpler line art the same theme works as a kids' book.
Open the themeTwo distinct buyers: science-curious kids and adults who want nebulas and planets.
Open the themeVery giftable, strong on social media and easy to theme: donuts, cupcakes, ice cream.
Open the themeSimple shapes make it ideal for preschool and for large-print editions.
Open the themeSeasonal windows: the calendar decides
Here the product is rarely the problem — the date is. A seasonal book published late does not sell; it waits for next year.
Sales concentrate in September and October. Publish before August, or leave the theme for next year.
Open the themeThe biggest window of the year and the most crowded one. List by early October to catch the ramp.
Open the themeA short spring window, less saturated than Christmas, and reusable every year.
Open the themeHow to publish one this week
Picking the niche is half of it. This is the short path from idea to a book uploaded to KDP.
- Pick a niche from the list and open it. Decide the sub-theme and the age it is for.
- Create the interior in the studio: describe the book in one sentence, choose the style and the page count.
- Review page by page and regenerate anything you do not like. Fixing it here is cheaper than after printing.
- Generate the 8.5 × 8.5 inch cover, with the spine already sized for your page count.
- Upload the interior and the cover to KDP following the step-by-step guide, check Print Previewer and publish.
What this list does not promise
Publishing in a niche with demand does not guarantee sales. The interior quality, the cover, the title, the keywords and patience matter as much as the theme, or more. This guide helps you choose where to compete — it does not skip the work.
Pick a niche and test it today
You can describe your book in one sentence and see how the pages come out before deciding whether to publish it. If the idea does not work, switch niches and try again.
